StreetMapper

StreetMapper is the world’s most accurate mobile laser mapping system with 360-degree vision.

StreetMapper is a dynamic 3D mapping system which uses the very latest last scanning technology precision navigation and advanced data processing coupled with innovative system design to scan highways, infrastructure, buildings and trees from a moving vehicle.

The StreetMapper system is calibrated so that each laser transmits its optical pulse at a known angle and uses satellite technology to calculate the exact real world position.  The data collected by StreetMapper can be used to create a highly detailed 3D models of  street corridors and overhead features; information that can be used for road surface and safety inspections, terrain and industrial asset mapping, bridge height surveys and road width mapping for entire routes.

StreetMapper Technology
The StreetMapper system is comprised of state-of-the-art DGPS and IMU components combined in the TERRAcontrol system, a roof mounted laser scanner platform, and a rack-mount PC/instrumentation cabinet. A custom-designed power supply and operator workstation is provided for each system depending on the survey vehicle. A variety of video and imaging systems can be included in the system to provide additional high resolution documentation. The system is extremely versatile and can be deployed on various vehicles:

  • Typical van (usually with a high roof)
  • 4x4 vehicle
  • Quad bike (larger models)
  • Boat
  • Train

Proven Accuracy
Demonstrating proven accuracies, StreetMapper uses well-proven laser scanning technology to capture the position of up to 600,000 3D points per second, while in motion.  The typical positional accuracy of StreetMapper is better than 3 cm with good GPS conditions and the point-to-point accuracy within the data is 10 mm. Positional accuracies of 1 CM have been achieved with additional ground control points.

Deliverables
In utilizing the latest in LiDAR technology, StreetMapper acquires, processes, and delivers data products that meet the diverse needs of GeoDigital’s Clientele.  The system is easy to mobilize and immediately after the survey, data is processed to provide point data with XYZ position and reflective intensity. Depending upon the customer’s requirements, the data can be processed and analyzed further:

  • Classification of laser data (for example ground, vegetation, buildings, wires)
  • Vectorization of laser data
  • Measurement of features
  • 3D modeling and texturing

Applications

Accident Reconstruction: 3D digital "maps" can be created of known accident black-spots, which can be used by investigators after an accident as part of their scene recording.

Coastal Surveying: Coastal zones can be mapped for various applications such as erosion and accretion studies, slope monitoring and beach level monitoring.

Highways,  Roads and Railroads:  Using the novel StreetMapper laser scanning system combined with video imagery, network assets can be mapped accurately and efficiently.

Overhead Line Surveys:  At normal driving speeds, StreetMapper can detect and map overhead lines. This data can then be used to determine wire heights, wire sag, and clearance of vegetation.

Abnormal Indivisible Loads: 3D digital "maps" can be created of roads and highways in order to investigate the feasibility of transporting large goods effectively and efficiently.

Precision Navigation
The onboard navigation system includes a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), consisting of GPS and GLONASS, a fiber optic gyro based Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) and the latest Direct Inertial Aiding (DIA) system to assist in areas of poor GPS reception. StreetMapper is the only system on the market to offer this level of precision navigation, which has been proven to increase the speed with which the GPS receiver gets back to high positional accuracy after a loss of signal by up to 5 seconds.

Multi Sensor Mapping
StreetMapper 360 offers a 360-degree field of view, a range of 300m and an effective measuring rate of 300kHz per sensor, delivering high precision performance and coverage. The scanners combine new, higher performance sensors with internal waveform processing to record unlimited returns per laser pulse and complete digital processing. An integrated high-resolution digital camera can be used to capture either still or video images.

Ease of Use
StreetMapper 360 has a dedicated touch screen LCD display that shows status information and allows the data capture parameters to be adjusted. Operations that require a higher level of skill, such as GPS processing, are undertaken post mission using sophisticated software for processing the collected navigation data, laser survey measurements and camera or video images. StreetMapper 360 also includes mission control and route planning software.
